Winery Spotlight #1- Garry Oaks

Story:
So this is a throwback, but I figured since I'm doing Winery Spotlights, I should include all the wineries we've visited thus far. Garry Oaks was one of our first stops on Salt Spring Island, and was a nice start to a time on the Island that would prove amazing. When we pulled up we were the only people there, and were attended to very well. The woman at the winery was glad for the conversation, and was happy to tell us about the wines, winery, owners and the island in general. She had just moved here recently herself, and was still discovering things.

Garry Oaks has recently gone up for sale, even though it's wines have been generally well received by critics and won numerous awards. There is a labyrinth on the property, which is pretty interesting. We were told that it's not a maze, because you get lost in a maze, and in a labyrinth, you find yourself. Cryptic, and retarded, but charming nonetheless.

Wines:
We tried four wines while we were there. Nothing astounding stands out in my memory. the pinot gris was nice and definitely a decent summer sipper. We tried a blend of merlot and cab franc, called Fetish, which was also interesting, but the grapes are all grown in the Okanagan. We also tried the Pinot Noir and another blend of Zweigalt and pinot noir which was their take on "blanc des noirs"(white of blacks) which is basically a white wine made of wines traditionally used for red winemaking.

Overall: Overall a nice experience, the lady was extremely helpful and welcoming and the winery was a nice walkabout.
