Ontario Wine Spot #12- 30Bench.
30Bench is just across the road from the Rosewood meadery, and is a gorgeous property. We opted for the private tasting in the back, meaning we got our own wine assistant and our pick of the proverbial litter of wines. This turned out to be a great idea as about 30 wasted bicyclists entered the front tasting room after we arrived, and were making quite a ruckus. Having a separate entity from them was in no way bad. We tasted three rieslings, all single vineyard, and two of which I found to be of middling quality, too astringent for me to really want to even finish the glass. The third was decent, still tangy, but less so. Our wine helped was a well-meaning person but by no means equipped to answer our questions, thankfully the powers that be at 30 bench have seen to that. They leave the winemakers notes and tasting notes in the hands of their employees. We quickly commandeered those hallowed pages and had all the information we would never need. Another note of quirk is that they use Venturi, a car parts dealer, to make them a wine-aerator, which our hostess swore by. Just so nobody feels like I'm way out of order, I've decided to intersperse my wine postings in with the progression of the trip, as I don't want to fall too far behind.
Gewurtraminer- Healthy balanced acid, nice white flowers aroma. Almost comes on the palate like it will end soapu, but gives way to a felty mouthfeel with lychee flavours.
Merlot- Really jammy nose, lots of dark fruit and tannins make for a long, smooth finish
Cab Franc-passed three times through the Venturi aerator.
-dark cherry flavours, lots of black pepper, medium tannins.
Benchmark Red- my tasting notes stopped here, but I think I remember enjoying this wine. Unsure.
