Ontario Wine Spot #15- Huff Estates

I'm going to be perfectly honest and say that I don't know the story behind Huff. The only thing I know is we used to serve it at our culinary school in the restaurant there. We arrived at the massive property that is the Huff in the early afternoon, and were astonished by it's size. It's a large project, comprising not only the winery, but a separate building housing a fine arts gallery as well. We entered the tasting room and had a lovely and friendly helper who had just moved here from Victoria B.C. and was obviously wickedly content to see young travelers. We had a good time doing the tasting, and got to try a few extras on the sly. That was a nice touch.

Pinot Gris-
Mineral, acid backed but with an overwhelming flavour of honeycomb and beeswax. Finishes a touch watery.

08 Off Dry riesling-
-Really hits you in the nose, lime zest and plenty of fruit
-sweeter than I expected, but still easy drinking

South Bay Vineyards rose-
-Old World burgundy style rose
-quite dry, smacks of strawberries and grapefruit

Pinot Noir-
-huge aromatics on this one, big fruit, juicy things
-really heavily oaked compared to the nose, lots of smoke and leather, really nice large pinot

Merlot
-Jammy nose, with ripe dark fruits
-peppery and a bit off-puttingly strange taste, not a fan

Cab-Merlot
-Astonishingly enough, Olives on the nose, like massively, hugely so. Super interesteting and a profile I've never really seen before.
-Really light bodied compared to the mediterranian nose and varietals, some dried prune, but mostly just olive

VQA first frost vidal-
-not icewine or late harvest
-grapes are let to frost once, then picked and pressed, driving up sugars
-appely, honey tones, with a touch of stone fruits, like maybe peach or apricot
